Cacao & Jungle Waterfall Tour – Puerto Viejo
Discover the roots of chocolate through Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean traditions — and refresh at a hidden rainforest waterfall.
This half-day tour blends culture, nature, and slow adventure into one unforgettable experience. You'll begin with a visit to a Bribri family or the Cacao Museum, where you’ll see how chocolate is made using traditional, hands-on techniques — from harvesting fresh cacao fruit to roasting and grinding beans over fire. Along the way, you’ll learn how cacao has played an important role not only in Bribri traditions but also in Afro-Caribbean culture throughout the region.
You’ll taste fresh chocolate, hear stories about cacao’s spiritual and medicinal uses, and get a glimpse into how these two cultures have shaped life in Talamanca for generations.
Next, we’ll drive through the lush hills of the Caribbean rainforest. Your guide will share stories about local life, nature, and history before we arrive at the trailhead. From there, it’s a short walk through the jungle to one of the region’s most beautiful waterfalls. Once there, you’ll have time to swim, relax, or just soak up the peaceful forest atmosphere.
This tour is available in the morning or afternoon, depending on what works best for your schedule. Whether you’re starting your day with culture and nature or ending it with a cool swim, you’ll return to Puerto Viejo with a deeper connection to the land — and probably a bit of chocolate in your bag.
We work directly with local families, keep our groups small, and prioritize respectful, community-based tourism. If you’re looking to experience the Caribbean beyond the beach, this is the perfect way to do it — with the people who call it home.
Cultural Canoe Experience – Bribri Traditions & Spirituality
Connect with the roots of Bribri culture on this meaningful journey through river, forest, and spirit.
This full-day experience takes you deep into the heart of Talamanca, where the Bribri people have lived in harmony with nature for generations. Your journey begins with a peaceful canoe ride through the jungle, where you’ll be surrounded by lush rainforest, wildlife, and the sounds of the river. Guided by a Bribri host, you’ll hear stories about the land, the people, and the traditions that continue to shape life in this region.
Once you arrive in the community, you’ll be welcomed into a traditional spiritual house — a sacred space where you’ll learn about the Bribri worldview, spiritual practices, and the symbols that guide their daily life. This is not a performance, but a genuine invitation to understand how nature, spirit, and community are deeply connected.
You’ll also take part in a hands-on cacao demonstration, where you’ll learn how chocolate is made the traditional way — roasted, ground, and prepared with intention. Cacao is much more than a treat here; it’s medicine, tradition, and a symbol of connection. Of course, you’ll get to taste the results.
A home-cooked Bribri lunch made with local, plant-based ingredients is included — simple, nourishing, and rooted in ancestral knowledge. After some time to relax and connect, you’ll return by canoe and head back to Puerto Viejo with a deeper understanding of the people and traditions that make this region so unique.
We work directly with Bribri families and spiritual leaders to offer respectful, community-based experiences. This tour is perfect for travelers looking to explore Indigenous culture in an honest, immersive, and meaningful way.
